Fort Buchanan advances civilian employee readiness through trust-focused training

FORT BUCHANAN, Puerto Rico — Civilian employees and leaders from U.S. Army Garrison Fort Buchanan participated in a Building Strong and Ready Teams (BSRT) workshop Nov. 4 at the installation's Community Club to strengthen trust, improve teamwork and enhance organizational effectiveness in support of military readiness.

The workshop focused on the "speed of trust" concept, emphasizing how integrity, effective leadership and strong professional relationships help organizations operate more efficiently while reinforcing the Army's commitment to taking care of its people.

Col. David L. Brewer, Fort Buchanan garrison commander, opened the workshop by connecting trust directly to the installation's mission of supporting Soldiers and military formations.

"As you build trust in your organization, you're able to speed up your operations, and you're able to create more value for those individuals that we're serving," Brewer said.

Brewer explained that the installation workforce creates value by delivering services and resources that enable military readiness.

"We build value for the Soldiers, the formations that are operating and building readiness on our installation," Brewer said.

The commander also highlighted the importance of trust during leadership transitions, emphasizing that strong relationships help organizations adapt to change and achieve results faster.

He identified integrity as a fundamental leadership expectation, reminding employees that trust takes time to establish but can disappear in seconds.

"It's your integrity; you own it," Brewer said.

Installation Chaplain Farlin Reynoso facilitated the workshop, emphasizing the influence supervisors and directors have on organizational culture and employee development.

"You influence way more than you think," Reynoso said.

Reynoso also outlined plans to expand the training to employees throughout the installation, extending its benefits beyond senior leaders and supervisors.

For Eileen Santiago, an administrative assistant with the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security, the workshop offered an opportunity to reflect on trust and strengthen relationships with colleagues.

"It was motivating. It made me think about why we trust people, systems, family and friends," Santiago said.

She also valued the opportunity to interact with coworkers outside their daily work environment.

"Sharing time with coworkers outside the office was enriching. It allowed us to see other people's perspectives," Santiago said.

The workshop demonstrates how the Army in Puerto Rico takes care of its people by investing in professional development, strengthening workplace relationships and fostering an organizational culture built on trust and accountability.

With an annual budget exceeding $500 million, Fort Buchanan supports about 15,000 active-duty personnel, Soldiers of the Army Reserve and Puerto Rico National Guard, Marine Corps Reserve members and Navy Reserve personnel, providing infrastructure and services that enable forces to train, mobilize and deploy worldwide.
